“I came here thinking I couldn’t learn.” Long hair, bushy beard, weathered face. Larry still resembles the part of an iconic homeless man. But his eyes tell a different story. There’s joy there now.
For the last half hour, Larry and his volunteer tutor, Gary, have been working through math curriculum together. Gary is patient and methodical—evidence of his many years as a high school math teacher. Larry is attentive and articulate. His mind is soaking it in. He really wants to do well.
Most homeless men and women come to us utterly defeated. They’ve failed at most things in life, including school. The structure and small strides of success they experience in our Learning Center give them hope that they really can make something of themselves. It heals both their hearts and minds.
“I really want to get my GED,” says Larry. Thanks to volunteers like Gary, our Learning Center will help Larry do that – and more.
