Help KOIN Local 6 Make A "Meal To Remember"
KOIN Local 6, Sysco and area businesses are providing homeless men and women with a "Meal To Remember" this Thursday, October 20th.
You can help give hope! KOIN is collecting blankets, coats, hats, gloves and scarves at Portland Rescue Mission's Burnside Shelter (111 W. Burnside, Portland). Look for the KOIN Local 6 truck parked in front of the Mission this Thursday to drop off your donation.
The day of giving will culminate with the "Meal To Remember" -- a delicious dinner cooked by chefs from Portland Prime, Pastini, Biscuits Cafe, Edenway Coffee and Violetta. Special thanks to Sysco and Country Natural Beef for providing all food and beverages.

Homelessness Ends for 7 Graduates of New Life Recovery
Last month, seven men marked important milestones in our New Life recovery program. Philip, Mark, Paul, Michael, Chris, Jason and Ron have completed 12 to 18 months of intensive addiction recovery, counseling, spiritual renewal and education.
All of these men came to us hurting and broken. Most never thought their lives would amount to much ever again. Today, they are off the streets, free of addiction and starting new lives.
On Friday, October 21st, five women will also graduate from Shepherd's Door, our recovery ministry for women and children.Thank you for helping us break the cycle of homelessness and addiction.

Kitchen Remodel Helps Feed And Care For Hungry People
Portland Rescue Mission provides over 236,000 hot, nutritious meals to hungry men, women and children every year.
Thanks to the generous support of a variety of foundation grants, the kitchen of our Burnside Shelter has been renovated to help us further improve our meal service.
This kitchen remodel has greatly increased the effectiveness of the food preparation and cooking. The oven/range is now dependable enough to evenly cook and efficiently bake in half the time of the previous oven, which in turn helps us serve better meals to our guests twice a day.
We now have a designated prep sink that will help us use the fresh produce that gets donated daily. And at the most fundamental level of safety, we can now clean and mop the floors without the water seeping into the rooms below, where we have safe shelter and refreshing showers for our overnight homeless guests.
The kitchen was closed during the two-week renovation. But thanks to the generous support of our community partners, we were able to continue providing hundreds of meals to homeless men and women.
Special thanks to the volunteers and organizations who provided donations of food:

Philip's Story of Hope
Philip had failed so many times, he didn't believe his life was worth anything.
Philip's Story of Hope (Quicktime Version)
From the first drink he took at age 14, Philip felt comfort as alcohol washed away his deep emotional pain. But the addiction and his own self-loathing destroyed decades of his life.
At Portland Rescue Mission, Philip began to heal from the root causes behind his addiction. Alcohol became powerless in his life. And a new Philip emerged.
